Yogabed Mattress Review

The Yogabed represents the best of the recent turn in the mattress industry toward the “factory-direct” sales model: the quality of a premium mattress at a low price afforded by circumventing mattress store show rooms.

Created in 2014 by a small team with a combined 40 years of mattress manufacturing experience, the Yogabed is—as the name and its website indicates—inspired by the practice of yoga and aims to nourish body, mind, and (yes,) soul. More tangibly, the Yogabed has been constructed to provide all of the benefits of memory foam mattresses without any of the drawbacks. Like most memory foam mattresses, the Yogabed is comprised of a number of different foam layers, which shift and sink to adjust to the weight of your body; however, the Yogabed (comprised of a patented “Yoga Comfort System”) uses their own combination of patented foam and gel.

The difference is immediately noticeable. With previous memory foam mattresses, I would lay down, sink in, and find it slightly difficult to readjust—or even sit up—simply because the foam would remain sunken where I had been laying. The Yogabed mattress counteracts, or at least curbs, this sinking with additional firmness and bounce: the sinking is slight (perhaps an inch or so); and when I move or sit up, the foam immediately readjusts or returns to its original shape.

1_Homepage_1Most surprising about the Yogabed is how effectively the YogaGel layer—which boasts a thermal conductivity seven times greater than traditional memory foam—cools the mattress. Anyone accustomed to memory foam mattresses knows how miserable they are to sleep on during the summer. I’ve been sleeping on the Yogabed since the beginning of a very hot and very humid August and, perhaps out of all of the Yogabed’s great qualities, I have been most grateful for the mattress’ excellent temperature calibration.

While the Yogabed offers the premium construction of a much more expensive mattress and a price structure comparable to those of a discount superstore, it maintains the character and attention to detail of small business or boutique. Matching the thoughtfulness of its construction is the mattress’ aesthetic appeal. The foam layers are housed in a sturdy charcoal fabric case, topped with a white, zip-off cover. (The cover comes off very easily and can be machine washed.) The removable cover also contains a high-performance fiber, deemed “Thermocool,” which also contributes to the mattresses cooling effect. The mattress appears minimalist and a detailed at once, with clean lines yielding to intricate stitching and construction.

YogaBed-Press-1497-LowResSuch a balance of minimalism and thoughtfulness is echoed the company’s delivery method. Yogabed delivers to your door (or dorm room) in a wholly straightforward and uncomplicated way. The Yogabed box includes a short set of instructions and a scissor-tool for cutting away the protective fabric protecting the vacuum-sealed mattress. Once the mattress seal is broken, it inflates fully in only five minutes. (Compare to the two-day inflation time of other memory foam mattresses.) In short, the unpacking and set-up begins at your door and is complete within ten minutes.

Of course, the most striking quality of the Yogabed is its low price. Mattresses begin at $549 and even its California King stays under a thousand dollars, particularly when you utilize the coupon codes that Yogabed seems to perpetually roll out. (The current one offers $60 off.) Additionally, every mattress purchase includes the zip-off cover and two free Yogabed pillows, made from the same patented foam combination and originally priced at $99 each. And though the company is too young for any reviewer to determine how well the mattress holds up over time, the company’s ten-year warranty certainly stands as a vote of confidence.

It bears noting that Yogabed holds a particular appeal to undergraduate students, who are often saddled with awful dorm mattress, and graduate students, whose stipends foreclose the possibility of buying anything of quality in a mattress store showroom. (It’s apparently already a trend.) For anyone else used to the entry-level showroom model or the discount superstore memory foam mattress, I whole-heartedly recommend the Yogabed as comparably priced mattress that offers an enormous increase in quality and comfort.
